How we count

Plain arithmetic. Nothing clever.

No AI and no guessing at difficulty. Just counting and dividing — so you can check the answer yourself.

  1. 01

    Count words and characters

Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters are counted one by one. Everything else is split on spaces and counted as words.

  2. 02

    Divide by a steady pace

Reading: 225 words a minute, or 500 CJK characters a minute. Speaking: 150 words or 300 characters a minute.

  3. 03

    Round up

The total is rounded up to the next whole minute, with a one-minute floor — a 2,000-word essay is 8.9 minutes, so it shows 9.

Your pace will differ. Dense technical writing reads slower; a light blog post reads faster. Treat the number as a good planning estimate, not a stopwatch.
